"Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard" ~ Revelation 3:3

Reformational Commentary on Ezekiel 39:22

"So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward." (Ezekiel 39:22)

Ezekiel 39:22 opens the Gog-Magog event's sweet epilogue in which God reconfirms His covenantal love, in Christ, for the literal seed of Jacob, to whom Deuteronomy 4:30-31 (among other passages) is also addressed, as follows:

"When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them." (Deuteronomy 4:30-31)

All of that which applies to Ezekiel 39:21 shall be impressed and imprinted upon the hearts and minds of the newly Christian Jews in Israel itself and worldwide, so the timing of their conversion is tightly locked to the timing of the Lord’s destruction of Gog; hence Israel will begin to know that Jesus is Lord and their God "from that day (i.e. of Gog's demise) and forward".

This highlights that Israel is not to become converted to Jesus weeks, months or years before the assault from Gog, but rather that it occurs during their hour of distress (as per Deuteronomy 4:30-31), when, due to the removal of western military support in the Levant under the sixth of the Seven Last Plagues1, Israel will be without a powerful helper in the world beyond to protect it or come to its aid.

This definitive, latter days (as indicated in Deuteronomy 4:30-31 and in Ezekiel 38:8), focal-point tribulation that Israel will find itself in shall be a one-off event and is one and the very same as that latter days event termed "Jacob's trouble" in Jeremiah 30:2

"Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be saved out of it." (Jeremiah 30:7),

and

"...in the latter days ye shall consider it." (Jeremiah 30:24)

Moreover, scriptural evidence for this synchronicity between the Gog-led invasion of northern Israel and the Jewish Epiphany is found Zechariah 12:

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn." (Zechariah 12:9-10)

This looking upon Him Whom they pierced was, in its simplest and prototype form, fulfilled by the believing Jews at the Crucifixion of Christ, as confirmed by John 19:37’s reference back to Zechariah 12:10, as follows:

"And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced." (John 19:37)

But here in its fullest, most complete and superlative form shall that prophecy of Zechariah be fulfilled, for only in the Gog-led assault against Israel shall “all the nations that come against Jerusalem” be judicially beaten by the Lord, and only at that time shall Israel as a whole nation, contained in Palestine, and with more of its members dwelling overseas, repent en bloc and turn to Christ all at once.

Moreover, they are going to find themselves isolated in the world, cast off and despised by the West (a process already underway):

"There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines. All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased." (Jeremiah 30:13-14)

This is the same state of abandonment implicit in Ezekiel 38:13, in which Gog's enemies, i.e., the major governments of the West, decry his intentions as a resource-grab in leading the nations of the East to attack Israel, Gog himself being the leader of Russia (Magog), the most powerfully nuclear-armed nation of the East.

Thus Israel will find itself internationally isolated just as it passes through the worst strait in its history, facing an even more existential destruction than that posed by Nazi Germany's Final Solution (during which the Jews did not repent and seek Christ, be it noted).

So what will Israel do?

God will cause it to remember that He is the God of Jacob, the covenant God of old, and the Jews shall - as a nation acting with one heart and mind - entreat Him, or more accurately, will have the spirit of grace and supplications poured out upon them (as Zechariah 12:10 describes it) to enable them to confess their iniquities and those of their godless ancestors saying, "Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities." (Lamentation 5:7), and to likewise through God's enabling alone, to both repent of their sins and to then look upon Christ, Who is God the Son, and see Him as such, and understand that Jesus was their Messiah after all, whereupon they shall call upon Him for mercy for their souls first and foremost, and then for temporal deliverance.

(This, take note, also contains the Reformational pattern of a single sinner's conversion to Christ, i.e., conviction of sinfulness concurrent with a new, regenerate heart of selfless love and reverence for God, then admission and confession of guilt amidst entreating Christ for redemption and forgiveness).

And so the Jews cannot know that the LORD (i.e. the covenant God Yahweh, including God the Son (Jesus Christ) is "their God from that day and forward" absent their Spirit-enabled turning to the very Messiah their ancestors hated and rejected:

"Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord, and we shall be turned;" (Lamentations 5:21)
"And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God." (Ezekiel 11:19-20)
"For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim[metaphors for the one true sovereign grace religion]: Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king [the spiritual David, i.e. Jesus Christ]; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days." (Hosea 3:4-5)

Be sure to notice that this turning to Christ is not something they will do of their own "free will", as the foolish Arminians think, but is explicitly here said to be enabled alone by a sovereign, ages-ago-preordained act of God, as asserted in Zechariah 12:10 (again, in the same and only God-enabled manner individual sinners have only ever turned to Christ) and forms part of their broader repentance; as Gill writes concerning John the Baptist's preaching of repentance to the Jews of old:

Nor ought the Jews above all people to object to John's [i.e. the Baptist] method of preaching; since they make repentance absolutely necessary to the revelation of the Messiah and his kingdom, and redemption by him; for they say in so many words, that "if Israel do not repent, they will never be redeemed; but as soon as they repent, they will be redeemed; yea, if they repent but one day, immediately the son of David will come." (John Gill on Matthew 3:2).

So today's godless, Christ-hating Jews, or minimally a number of their rabbis, understand that there is a symbiotic relationship between repentance from sin and redemption through the Messiah!

Their error, however, is not understanding that Jesus is that Messiah, that He has already come, and that repentance includes sincerely, and with a true heart, "kissing the Son" (Psalm 2:12).

And so we find the whole of Israel in the Zechariah 12 prophecy, not a handful of its members, in remorse for its sin and in supplicating entreaties to the Lord, whereof the short-lived, but nevertheless real, mass repentance of Israel in Ezra’s time was an imperfect foreshadowing (see Ezra 9 & 10).

Moreover, we should further take notice of the fact that not only is Gog’s assault on Israel to be a "latter days" event, as prophesied in Ezekiel 38:8 and timed for the aftermath of the Jewish regathering from their exile abroad to their homeland in Palestine, that is, "gathered out of many people", but so also is the Jewish Epiphany a latter days event, because:

  1. As of the middle years of the present decade (the 21st Century's third decade), it has not yet happened.
  2. Numerous ancient prophecies (e.g. Deuteronomy 4:30 quoted above) make the Jews’ turning to Christ a latter days event that occurs after the Jewish return to Palestine and its formation into the new nation of Israel, which occurred in 1948 and which, tellingly, has been greatly hated by the East’s two most grotesque creatures, communism and Islam, ever since.
"...Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: [initially fulfilled by the restoration of the country of Israel in Palestine in 1948] And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all [this shall be Jesus, the spiritual "David" of Ezekiel 34:23]: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all. Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwelling places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God [the only spiritual context in which that can be valid is their conversion to Christ]. And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: ["David" and "one shepherd" being metaphors for Jesus as their Messiah] they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. [by that point having become converted to Christ] And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt [i.e. Palestine, hence Satan is working feverishly today in the children of disobedience to have Israel ejected from Palestine]; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever [reiterating the point in Ezekiel 39:22 that Israel will never again go into apostasy]. Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And the heathen shall know that I the Lord do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore." (Ezekiel 37:21-28; see also Ezekiel 37:12, which makes the Jewish Epiphany an event contemporaneous with the Jews being restored to their ancestral homeland.

Timing: When will Israel Convert to Christ?

This restoration of the Jews to the Messianic fold, uniting the newly Messianic Jew with Gentile Christian in one church invisible, in one Body of Christ, is the focal point not just of some New Testament prophecies (notably Romans 11:15), but of many Old Testament ones also, including much of the book of Isaiah, parts of Jeremiah (e.g. Jeremiah 30), Ezekiel (obviously, given the title of this commentary!), Daniel and the so-called minor prophets.

But of all the relevant Old Testament prophecies of this development, perhaps none adds a timing specificity as much as Hosea does, as follows:

"Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth." (Hosea 6:1-3)

Gill makes a rather astonishing observation on the Hosea 6 quote above, that goes as follows:

"After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up"

The Jews, in their present state, are as dead men, both in a civil and spiritual sense, and their conversion and restoration will be as life from the dead [here Gill refers to Romans 11:15, which has particular specificity to the life their conversion brings to the current doubly dead state of the Sardian church during the slain condition of the Lord’s public witness in the West]; they are like persons buried, and, when they are restored, they will be raised out of their graves, both of sin and misery; see Romans 11:15, Ezekiel 37:11-14; the time of which is here fixed, after two days, and on the third; which Jarchi [aka Rashi] interprets of the two temples that have been destroyed, and of the third temple to be built, which the Jews expect, but in vain [the early church understood that Christ had promised in Matthew 24 that it would never be rebuilt, but today's futurism-intoxicated prophecy experts seem unaware of that], and when they hope for good times: Kimchi explains it of their three captivities, in Egypt, Babylon, and the present one, and so Ben Melech3, from which they hope to be raised, and live comfortably; which sense is much better than the former: and with it may be compared Vitringa's notion of the text, that the first day was between Israel's coming out of Egypt and the Babylonish captivity; the second day between that and the times of Antiochus [the vile Grecian king, Antiochus IV Epiphanes], which was the third night; then the third day followed, which is the times of the Messiah: but the Targum comes nearer the truth, which paraphrases the words thus,

"he will quicken us in the days of consolation which are to come, and in the day of the resurrection of the dead he will raise us up;"

whereby days of consolation are meant the days of the Messiah, with which the Jews generally connect the resurrection of the dead [but mistakenly so, for the first resurrection (of the just) comes at the end of the Laodicean aberrancy when Christ returns Personally, whereas the second resurrection (of the damned) comes at the end of the Millennial binding of Satan]; and if we understand them of the last days of the Messiah [by which Gill means the glorious Philadelphian church age, i.e., the Kingdom’s golden age, which contrary to popular bad eschatological thinking of the present day still, as of 2026, lies ahead, the present day being the closing moments of Sardis], it is not much amiss; for the words respect the quickening and raising up of the Jews in the latter day, the times of Christ's spiritual coming and reign [i.e. the Kingdom age of Daniel 7:18,22]: and these two and three days may be expressive of a long and short time, as interpreters differently explain them; of a long time, as the third day is a long time for a man to lie dead, when there can be little or no hope of his reviving, (see Luke 24:21); or of a short time, for which two or three days is a common phrase; and both true in this case: it is a long time Israel and Judah have been in captivity, and there may seem little hope of their restoration; but it will be a short time with the Lord, with whom a thousand years are as one day, and one day as a thousand years: and this I take to be the sense of the words, that after the second Millennium, or the Lord's two days, and at the beginning of the third [i.e. in the present, 21st Century!], will be the time of their conversion and restoration, reckoning from the last destruction of them by the Romans; for not till then were Israel and Judah wholly in a state of death: many of Israel were mixed among those of Judah before the Babylonish captivity, and many returned with them from it; but, when destroyed by the Romans, there was an end of their civil and church state; which will both be revived on a better foundation at this period of time: but if this conjecture is not agreeable (for I only propose it as such), the sense may be taken thus, that in a short time after the repentance of Israel, and their conversion to the Lord, they will be brought into a very comfortable and happy state and condition, both with respect to things temporal and spiritual [NOTE that this blessing matrix applies not just to the newly converted nation of Israel and the newly Christian Jews worldwide, but to the rest of church invisible as well, the two parties being fused into one Body of Christ (as alluded to in Isaiah 54:13-14)];

"and we shall live in his sight;"

comfortably, in a civil sense, in their own land, and in the possession of all their privileges and liberties; and in a spiritual sense, by faith on Jesus Christ, whom they shall now embrace, and in the enjoyment of the Gospel and Gospel ordinances; and the prophet represents the penitents and faithful among them as believing and hoping for these things. (John Gill on Hosea 6:2).

Gill thereby adduces the maxim that "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years" (2 Peter 3:8) in support of a proposal that the timing for the Jewish conversion to Christ would be around, or of the order, of two thousand years from the Roman Empire’s siege of Jerusalem in AD 70; that is, some time in our present century!

But Gill, modestly reluctant to insist on that proposal of his, offers the safety net of a more certain understanding of the passage, as applying (as it surely will) to the great peace and safety that the Christian Jewish nation of Israel, and by inference, its Gentile Christian brethren in the world beyond, shall enjoy from the time of the Jewish Epiphany and deliverance from Gog, onward.

That said, I think both understandings proposed by Gill are valid: the Jewish Epiphany will happen this 21st Century and it will herald great spiritual and temporal blessedness for all of the Lord’s children.

However, I go further and say that it will happen around the close of the present decade, circa 2029/30, approximately a full 2,000 years (i.e. "two days") after the Ephesian church era began (rather than reckoned from AD 70-71 as Gill proposes), just as the three-and-a-half year silence of the Lord’s public witness, lying slain by the Scarlet Beast (the western elites' godless system), is at its end.

My argument for this proposed timing is thus:

  1. Israel, bar the elect few who believed in Christ during His first advent, became or more specifically demonstrated - definitively - that they were "dead" to God at the opening of His ministry and that accordingly, have manifestly been in a spiritually dead state for the two "millennial days" that Gill proposes above from that time until now; that is, almost two thousand literal years, on the basis that Jesus was crucified ca. AD 30-335 and therefore His ministry began AD 27-30.
  2. Modern Israel's conversion to Christ is to happen while the Gentile church is "dead", hence that conversion is to bring "life from the dead" (Romans 11:15) to the Gentile church transcendent; it cannot bring life from the dead to an already lively church!

Now, how more dead can the Gentile church be than (a) when it is in its present Sardian state6 ("thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead" Revelation 3:1) and (b) when its public witness against error (the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11) lies slain, that is, silenced, in the sight of the ungodly, thanks to the wicked actions of the beast from the bottomless pit (Revelation 11:7 - the same beast as that described in Revelation 17, i.e., secular, atheistic western power, as first proposed by Alexander Hislop in 1849 in his book, The Red Republic)?

The conversion of the Jews must therefore bring not just irrevocable blessing to the Gentile church, but also happen when the Gentile church is at its lowest ebb, i.e., right at the close of the Sardis church age, on the eve of, and acting as a trigger event for, the glorious Philadelphian era in which the saints of the most High will, as Daniel 7:27 promises, possess the kingdom and dominion under heaven (i.e. assume temporal rulership over first one and then another and another nation until the whole world falls, in accordance with Daniel 2:44, under godly rule and the Gospel flourishes like never before, as Christ intimates in Revelation 3:7).

But when will the Lord's public witness against error lie dead?

Well, it already is thus here in the UK and in much of Europe, thanks to Satanic hate speech laws brought in by the beast system in its final scarlet (hyper socialist aka globalist) form, and the very same killing is underway in America and the rest of the West, all in the name of online safety, homeland security, anti-terrorism, etc., following the pattern of excuses for suppression attempted against Christians by the dying Roman empire of bygone times.

With that all being so, it means that the Jews' conversion to Christ - and the concurrent or contemporaneous dreadful Great Day of the Lord Almighty, i.e., the last global war mankind will ever know and which begins with the Gog-led invasion of Palestine - will all occur around the present decade's end, because the clock is ticking down now that the Lord's public witness (i.e. out on the streets, or in open discourse with the ungodly) is effectively dead in every major western city.
  3. The Kingdom of Daniel 7:18, etc., which begins with the life-from-the-dead effects upon the Gentile church caused by the conversion of the Jews promised in Romans 11:15, is elementally part of the same Kingdom that Jesus spoke of to the disciples in Luke 17:21:
"Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:21)
    Gill on this says:
    the words may be rendered,

"the kingdom of God is among you;"

and the meaning be, that the king Messiah was already come, and was among them, and his kingdom was already set up, of which the miracles of Christ were a full proof; (John Gill's commentary on Luke 17:21)
And so I submit that the Kingdom in the alternative form of words proposed by Gill consists of a special presence of Christ among His people, the fruits whereof were extraordinary spiritual blessings along with temporal blessings, notably healing of illnesses and the general betterment of people's lives, all of which things are assured during the Philadelphian church age because by then, (a) the Seven Last Plagues of Revelation 15-16 will be finished and therefore God will have completed His temporal judgments on humanity (hence the plagues are said to be the last plagues, the final of which includes the dismantling of all false religion, an obvious complement to the advance of the one true religion) and (b) the spiritual and temporal blessedness promised to the future Messianic house of Israel in the Old Testament prophets will come to fruition.

That being the case, the spiritual reign of Christ that the English Puritans spoke of that would constitute the Philadelphian church age, i.e., the unprecedented worldwide success of the gospel of grace and the rulership of the nations falling like dominoes into the hands of godly, Christ-honouring men, is a second manifestation of the Kingdom Christ spoke of, the third one being the Millennium, when Christ return and reigns in Person among us,7 demonstrating a heavenward progression in blessedness upon humanity.

Therefore, it seems to be the case that Gill's two thousand year proposal described above spans history from the commencement of the first manifestation of the Kingdom at the opening of Jesus' ministry to the second manifestation of the Kingdom at the opening of the Philadelphian church age which starts with the conversion of the Jews; this would again place the Jewish Epiphany at around the close of the present decade.

FOOTNOTES

1. Of the Seven Last Plagues of Revelation 15-16, the penultimate (i.e. the sixth) plague entails two (some would say three) key elements:

  • The drying up of "the great river Euphrates", "that the way of the kings of the East might be prepared"; this is mistakenly interpreted by some or most historicist / Reformed writers as a reference to the godly (as "kings of the East") ascending to power and honour in this world, the mistake starting with the fact that a clearer metaphor for the godly could have been used and continuing with the fact that the context is the ensuing build-up to the worst war in history, a war that follows under the seventh and final plague. So rather, the meaning of the Euphrates being dried up is the removal of all geopolitical impediments currently keeping the most powerul nations of the non-western world from irrupting into and overflowing the Middle East. That is to say, this plague begins with the end of American-led hegemony and military presence in the Middle East, leaving Israel without its traditional "big protector" and exposed to the whims of Russia, China and their allies. Obviously, the dynamics for this American withdrawal are already in place and began with its abandonment of Afghanistan, a strategic decision that to this day baffles many military observers in the West, and these dynamics are continuing apace with America's reckless action against Iran that cannot succeed in its objectives because, prophetically from Ezekiel 38:5, Iran must abide intact as a regional power for the Gog-led assault.

Add to that the dramatic surge in anti-Israel sentiment in the West, especially amongst grassroots conservatives in the US (including more and more evangelicals), that really began in earnest with Israel's bombardment of Gaza and that accelerated with the assassination of Charlie Kirk in September 2025, around the same time that France, the UK, Australia, Canada and others formally recognised Palestine as a state at the United Nations, and we can see an undeniable pre-tremor for the West's decoupling from Israel that would leave it forsaken of all its erstwhile friends and allies.

It may be further added that the crowning act of this metaphorical drying up of the Euphrates would be a peace treaty brokered not by the West, but by the lead nation of the East, the "barbarian" world, namely the one with the greatest stockpile of the most fearsome weapons of all, i.e., Russia, the land of Magog, and as I mentioned in the commentary on Ezekiel 38:14, there seems (to me at least!) to be something of a hint there that Gog himself will be the chief broker of a West-forsaken Israel's peace. Whether that happens or not, and if it does, whether or not it precedes or comes at the end of America's withdrawal from the Middle East, somehow Israel has to be left alienated from the West yet nonetheless abiding with a false sense of peace.
  • The gathering of the nations together "to the battle of that great day of God Almighty" (Revelation 16:14, one and the same as Joel 3:14), the instrumentality of which shall be three unclean spirits emanating from the mouth of the dragon, the beast and the false prophet, i.e., from the mouth of Satan himself (the dragon) working directly on the rulers of the nations of "the Sea" (the East, the barbarian world), from the mouth of the West's ruling elites (the beast system) and from the mouth of the media experts, the influencers, the false clergy, the celebrities, the educators, in sum, all who are trusted voices of authority in service to, and building consent through narratives for, the wicked policies of the West's elites.

In simpler terms, as this sixth plague unfolds, the ungodly rulers of the nations will be straining at the leash for a decisive war that will settle once and for all who gets to rule the planet (or so they think), and it will become apparent to the switched-on among the masses, especially to Christians, that Armageddon, the metaphorical scene of this terrible war, is at hand; notably, it will be at this point that Christ's interjection in Revelation 16:15 will be heard by His people; note that its language very much resembles that of His address to Sardis in Revelation 3's opening verses, and for good reason: Sardis ends during the seventh plague that follows and transitions into the joyous aftermath that will be the Philadelphian church age, with "life from the dead" to the Sardian (dead - see Rev 3:10) Gentile church caused by the Jews returning to Christ at last.

(See my article, Why the Age of Missionaries was NOT the Philadelphian Church Era for more on this subject; and kindly note that the Reformational position, borrowed by the heresy that is Dispensationalism, is that the letters to the seven churches are addressed to the New Testament era church ages, right up until Jesus returns).

2. Jeremiah 30 pertains to the future restoration of the ethnic Jews, the physical descendents of Jacob, to the Messianic fold.

4. See, for instance:

And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. (Isaiah 54:13-14)

5. On the date of Jesus' Crucifixion, apparently most scholars (for what that's worth!) lean to AD30.

6. Again, see my article, Why the Age of Missionaries was NOT the Philadelphian Church Era.

7. This is also how John Gill saw it (as presumably did numerous other English Puritan writers), but somehow the Millennium and the spiritual reign of Christ became merged in Reformed thinking during the general declension throughout ostensible Protestantism in the 1800s. That declension was foretold in Revelation 10's prohibition on John to record and disclose the contents of the seven thunders of that chapter, i.e., the Lord was displeased with the professing church for its dalliance with Arminianism and its increasing abandonment of the Regulative Principle of Worship, and - in my view at least - as a judgment sent eschatological blindness upon it.
