Reformational Commentary on Ezekiel 39:5
"Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD" (Ezekiel 39:5)
Ezekiel 39:5 repeats, by way of emphasis, the open and highly visible demise of Gog and his forces when the assault against Israel comes to pass;
his humiliation and destruction will be beheld by the whole world and thereby, the Lord's indignation against him and his allies, and even more so,
the Lord's loving approval upon a newly Messianic, evangelical, Reformed (Calvinist) Protestant nation of Israel shall be seen and mused upon
by the onlooking world who will now be confornted with the fact that there is only one true religion and that there is only one true form of
Christianity, the faith of the Reformers, so hated, so reviled, by Papist, Orthodox and Arminian apostate alike.
And the certainty of this is all the more emphasised, for the comfort of the Lord’s children of the present antebellum preceding it, by the words
"for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD".
That is, "the Lord Jehovah", the covenant Name God uses in matters pertaining to His Messianic redemptive dealings with the nation of Israel,
especially within the context of Israel's long-promised return to the Messianic fold, which is a major theme - and, some would say THE
major theme - of the book of Isaiah.
Therefore we are to be neither dismayed nor in admiration of the vast scale of the armies of the East, for their undoing is assured by God’s
decree as part of His coming demonstration to mankind of His enduring covenant-of-grace love for Israel and His owning of the Reformed faith that
Israel will profess once He pours out His Spirit upon that nation as a whole, never thereafter to be revoked (i.e. Israel will never depart from
the Messianic faith again):
"Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest. Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places" (Isaiah 32:15-18)
"But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine... For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour... Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;" (Isaiah 43:1-6)
